Be the Person You Were Meant to Be

The 5 Keys to a Happy Life

Five keys are needed to open the door that leads to a life of happiness and contentment. When you step through this door, you will not be the person you are now. Instead, you will be the person that you were meant to be before life got in the way.

Research in preventive medicine found that people who obtain the five keys to happiness are likely to have their lives filled with happiness, purpose, and contentment.

Do not just take my word for it. Research in preventive medicine found that people who obtain these five keys are likely to have their lives filled with happiness, purpose, and contentment. Since this door has five locks, all five keys are needed to open it. If only one of these keys is missing, then it will affect the ability of all the others to open this door.

The five keys are:

A Strong Spirit

A strong spirit ignites your drive into a new life.

Sadly, most people live in 'easy-mode' and sleepwalk through life.

A Strong Mind

A strong mind is the driver to navigate your new life.

Only a strong mind can stop you from being manipulated, used, and pushed around.

A Strong Body

A strong body is the vessel that will carry you on your journey. This does not mean that you must be perfectly healthy and fit. The goal here is to take action and be as healthy as your body will allow. If you are in poor health or dealing with a handicap, then a strong mind and spirit will compensate. Thirty years ago, when I was given three months to live, a strong spirit made me determined to either beat my ailment or be the healthiest corpse in the morgue. These days, at age sixty, I am in the best health of my life; and I use my good health to see the world, climb mountains, and scale glaciers.

A Strong Relationship

The people you choose to take along on your ride can make your journey pleasant or miserable. Humans are social animals, however, having a strong relationship need not mean that you must be with someone else. Many single people live incredibly happy lives. If sharing your life with another, then a strong relationship is a must.

A Strong Wallet

As Richard Paul Evans cleverly points out in his book The 5 Lessons a Millionaire Taught Me: Money is not the root of al evil. The love of money is the root of all evil. In my opinion, money is a tool, and like any tool it can be used for good or evil. It is only with money and resources that one can do good. Just think how much more you can help others with the influence of money behind you.

Money Can Buy Happiness

When money is used properly, it can buy happiness. In fact, research performed at the Harvard Business School found that spending money makes people happy. This research goes on to state that the happiness is greater when the money is spent on experiences and not material possessions.

Regardless of how you feel about money, one thing is certain: You will need money to pave your path to happiness. Being a Stoic, I believe people can find some happiness regardless of their financial situations. However, a life of happiness will never grow out of poverty. As John Wayne said, “It is more comfortable to cry in a Mercedes than on a bicycle.”

The Meaning of Life

My mother's spiritual counselor mentioned that many of the people she visits struggle to find meaning to their lives. If you wish to be happy, then you must stop wasting your life searching for meaning because there is no meaning to life. And that, my friends, is the meaning to life. When you ride a roller coaster, you get on, you have ups and laugh, and you have downs and scream, then you laugh again and get off. If the ride is going to end anyway, then why do we ride the roller coaster in the first place? We ride it for the thrill. Life is no different. Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Atari, said, “The Nature of Man is to Play.” We especially love to play the game of life. Best of all, we do not have to win or lose, we just have to enjoy playing. If you wish to enjoy this game, then you must live in the moment. The here and now is the only thing that matters, and it is the only thing that really exists. You can plan for the future, but when it comes to worry, let the future worry for itself.
